NUC Approves AI, 4 Other New Tech-Focused Courses For Veritas University

The National Universities Commission, NUC, has approved five new undergraduate programmes for Veritas University, Abuja to expand the institution’s academic offerings.
Veritas University, Abuja, said the development has expanded its academic portfolio with the introduction of five new departments approved by the NUC, adding that it aimed at strengthening its capacity in technology-driven education and preparing students for emerging global career demands.
The newly approved programmes are B.Sc Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc Cyber Security, B.Sc Information Systems, B.Sc Data Science, and B.A Theatre Arts.
Mr. Ben Agande, the university’s Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications, in a statement said the expansion increases the institution’s total academic offerings to 43 programmes across 12 faculties and a College of Medicine.
Agande noted that the university already runs a broad range of courses, including Law, Medicine and Surgery, Software Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering, among others.
He said the introduction of the new departments was driven by the need to respond to evolving industry requirements and prepare students for future labour market opportunities in a rapidly changing global environment.
Speaking on the development, the Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Hyacinth Ichoku, said the new programmes are intended to strengthen the university’s academic profile, particularly in computing and emerging technologies.
“The new programmes will integrate advanced computational thinking, human-centred design and robust data analysis to prepare our students for the dynamic careers in an evolving digital landscape and to consolidate on the University’s robust computing programmes which have been nationally and internationally acclaimed,” he said.
He added that early exposure to relevant skills is critical for students to remain competitive in an increasingly complex global environment.
“In order to remain relevant in a competitively complex world, students must be exposed early in their academic pursuit to necessary skills set that will set them apart from others.
“As Artificial Intelligence and Data science continue to shape a large sector of human life, we cannot afford to lag behind. We want a personalized learning experience that can bridge existing education gaps. We want our students to be capable of providing the expertise that can safeguard institutional and National Data. This expansion aligns with our broader goal of leveraging technology to advance our core functions of teaching, research and community service.
“We want our students to be pacesetters in the world of interactive technologies and masters in securing critical digital infrastructure. We want them to be leaders in these high demand fields,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor further explained that programmes in Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Data Science and Information Systems are being introduced in response to global shifts in education and employment trends, where demand for digital skills continues to rise.
Across the world, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data science have become some of the fastest-growing fields, driven by increasing reliance on digital systems, data protection needs, and technological innovation.
By adopting these disciplines, Veritas University joins other tertiary institutions in Nigeria aligning their curricula with global standards and labour market realities.
The university encouraged prospective students interested in the new and existing programmes to visit its admission portal for application details and entry requirements.
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has appointed Prof. Leonard Karshima Shilgba as Acting Vice Chancellor, University of Agriculture Science and Technology (UAST), Ihugh.
In a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, on Thursday, said Prof. Shilgba took over from Dr. Qrisstuberg Msughter Amua who has been relieved for administrative reasons.
Governor Alia who is the Visitor to the university, while congratulating the new Acting Vice Chancellor, stated that, “This is a position of great responsibility, and we trust you will lead with wisdom, integrity, and fairness.
“As you assume this office, I urge you to provide steady leadership, strengthen academic excellence, and promote unity among staff and students”.
Alia further advised Prof. Shilgba to ensure he prioritizes the welfare of members of the university and works diligently to uphold the values and reputation of the institution.
According to the statement, “The appointment takes immediate effect.
Shilgba is a Professor of mathematics, university administrator, scholar, author, educationist, and academic leader”
“He hails from Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State and has had a distinguished academic and administrative career spanning over three decades”
The statement further stated, “His academics also include advanced postdoctoral research experience. In 2009, he was awarded a Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Fellowship, through which he undertook postdoctoral research in Japan. His experience in university leadership has also included participation in strategic planning and institutional development at a period of significant transformation in Nigerian higher education.

“In 2017, President Buhari appointed Professor Shilgba as the Chairman of the 9th Governing Board of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), where he served with vision, distinction, and uncompromising disposition” the statement added.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM) branch, formerly known as Benue State University (BSU) has suspended its industrial action with immediate effect.
According to ASUU, the decision followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Benue State Government and the university management.
Recall that, MOAUN lecturers had embarked on indefinite strike on June 1, 2026, over welfare related issues.
In a statement issued by the MOAUM chapter Chairman of the ASUU, Dr. Ako Sule, on Wednesday, directed academic staff of the university to resume duties immediately.
“The decision to suspend the industrial action became necessary following the successful signing of a Memorandum of Understanding arising from a tripartite agreement involving the Union, the Benue State Government and the University Administration,” he said.
“The Union expects the government and the University Administration to faithfully implement the terms of the MoU and respect the principles and rules of collective bargaining. Sustained industrial harmony can only be achieved when agreements freely entered into are honoured promptly and in good faith,” Sule said.
